Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMOHC) are responsible for distributing Holy Communion and/or the Blood of Christ when ordained ministers are either absent, or when there is a large number of communicants. The term “extraordinary” distinguishes from the “ordinary” minister of Holy Communion (bishops, priests, or deacons).
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion normally serve during the celebration of the Holy Mass on Sundays (including the Saturday Vigil Mass) and for Holy Days of Obligation. In addition to serving during the traditional Mass, you may be asked to serve during weddings, funerals, Holy Days of Obligation, or other special Masses.
Those interested in this ministry should not have a fear of performing their duties in front of the congregation. Additionally, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should not only possess strong knowledge of the Holy Eucharist (what it truly is), but also have love and devotion for Christ, and be in a state of grace.
